Central London’s green heart comes alive during the festive season at the annual Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. From ice skating at the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink to watching aerial and acrobatic performances at Zippos Christmas Circus, there are myriad activities for adults and children. You can also create an ice sculpture, hop aboard a Ferris wheel for views 70 metres above ground and look for gifts at a market with 100 charming chalets selling baubles, woolly gloves and street food.

Meandering through this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a joy any time of the year, but it feels magical when it’s lit up in winter. You’ll be surprised by dancing waterside reflections, Victorian glass houses covered in lights and glowing figures emerging from a lake. Don’t miss the installation Aurora at the Holly Walk – inspired by the visual phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis – and Spheric, a dome of lights suspended over water. You can also savour street food, mulled grape and hot chocolate, or dine in The Botanical Brasserie, which overlooks the pond near Palm House and serves a delicious Afternoon Tea featuring delightful treats such as cucumber and mint yoghurt finger sandwiches or mini tea cakes.
Kew Gardens | To 9 January 2022
Taking place in a new location near Knightsbridge, the Museum of Architecture’s Gingerbread City returns this year with a new environmental theme: nature in the city. You’ll find a whole city made out of gingerbread, with manor houses, skyscrapers and town halls, as well as parks and forests and models reflecting on the consequences of climate change. It’s a fun and festive way for the whole family to learn about architecture and design and there are also gingerbread house-making workshops if you want to get creative.
Knightsbridge | 4 December 2021 – 9 January 2022
