Dubai is one of the world’s most progressive cities, a beguiling mix of contemporary architecture, modern cultural institutions, world-class shopping and decadent dining. Here’s how to take in this inspiring Emirate if time really is of the essence.

Morning

Start your day in Old Dubai at the Gold Souk on the Deira side of Dubai Creek. Wander past the glittering storefronts, speak to the friendly vendors, and maybe even haggle over a price. Keep going until you reach the vibrant colours and pungent aromas of the Spice Souk. Here you’ll find stalls selling fresh cinnamon, mace, turmeric and saffron, and probably a spices few you’ve never heard of.

From there, hop aboard an abra (a traditional wooden water taxi) and head for Al Fahidi, a historical neighbourhood, home to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding – a must-visit for those wanting to learn more about traditional Emirati culture. If modernity is more your thing, then the Jameel Arts Centre – Dubai’s immaculate new contemporary art institution on Jaddaf Waterfront – is an easy stroll away.

Afternoon

For lunch, jump in a taxi and make your way to Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), where you’ll find some superb restaurants including La Petite Maison, Zuma Club Ltd and Cipriani Downtown.

Take the Dubai Metro one stop from DIFC to Downtown Dubai, home to The Burj Khalifa, and The Dubai Mall. Book the ‘At the Top’, Burj Khalifa SKY package and experience spectacular views of Dubai on a guided tour spanning three floors of one of the world’s tallest buildings. After travelling at 10m/s in one of the world’s fastest elevators, you’ll eventually step out onto the outdoor terrace of one of the world’s highest observation decks, 555m above the ground. Your reward - the ultimate panorama of Dubai.

Finish the afternoon with a shopping spree at The Dubai Mall, the largest shopping mall in the Middle East and the second largest in the world. Don’t leave without browsing the boutiques of Fashion Avenue, where you’ll find more than 200 global designer brands.

Evening

Make your way to Souk Madinat Jumeirah, modelled on a traditional Arabian souk, to indulge in a little more shopping before enjoying a sundowner on the terrace at the award-winning Folly by Nick and Scott, one of an array of excellent restaurants there. Stay for dinner and you won’t be disappointed – Nick Alvis and Scott Price were trained by Gordon Ramsey, and are now two of Dubai’s most talented chefs.

Night

For the perfect finale, take in a performance at Dubai Opera, and be sure to stop by The Dubai Fountain on your way back to your hotel – it’s the world’s largest performing cascade of water and is accompanied by a mesmerising light and sound show. Explore Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts in Dubai
