Solo travelling is a wonderful opportunity to explore on your own terms. While the experience is empowering, it can seem daunting at first, so we’ve rounded up some of the best group experiences to help you settle into your destination and get acquainted with interesting, like-minded people. Whether you’re a history buff, thrill seeker or an avid explorer, London, Dubai and Nanjing have something to offer every discerning traveller.

London

If you’ve come to London to see some fabulous art, perhaps join an art tour. The city is home to world-renowned art museums including The National Gallery which overlooks Trafalgar Square, but it is also home to smaller, equally splendid galleries with enviable collections, particularly around Mayfair and Knightsbridge, on The Carlton Tower Jumeirah’s doorstep.

Or, for foodies, take a visit to one of London’s bustling markets. From Borough Market to Camden Market, there are countless street food tours to guide you a taste of the capital’s most delicious culinary delights.

For a brief respite from the lively city, the great British countryside with its rolling hills and quaint villages surrounds London. There are many tours offering an escape into the country, including round trips to Shakespeare’s home in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the beautiful expanses of the Surrey Hills or the picturesque towns of the Cotswolds.

Alternatively, to keep fit on your travels, join a fitness class at the Peak Fitness Club and Spa on the 9th and 10th floor of The Carlton Tower Jumeirah, with curved floor-to-ceiling windows allowing light to flood in while you work out. Get your blood pumping with a kickboxing session, or relax in pink hues with a sunrise or sunset yoga practice.

Dubai

Learn about the history and culture of Dubai on a walking tour of the historical neighbourhood of Al Fahidi, filled with colourful souks selling artisanal goods, food stalls with Emirati offerings and old buildings including the Al Fahidi Fort from 1787, now home to the Dubai Museum. Many tours also offer the opportunity to climb aboard a traditional wooden abra boat and glide across Dubai’s bustling Creek, a short journey from Jumeirah Creekside Hotel.

For a thrill-seeker’s alternative, reap the rewards of Dubai’s spectacular location in the midst of a sandy desert next to the Arabian Gulf. Catch the wind with some sailing or windsurfing, seek a thrill with water skiing or wakeboarding or embark on a banana boat or kayak trip at any of Jumeirah’s hotels and resorts in Dubai. Or, explore the ochre dunes of the Arabian desert, with tours on quad bikes, 4x4s or even camels departing from the city daily.

You can also take part in the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project, which aims to protect the seven species of marine turtles, all of which are listed as vulnerable to extinction. They are initially treated at the Burj al Arab’s impressive aquarium before being brought back to full health at the Turtle Rehabilitation Sanctuary at Jumeirah Al Naseem, where visitors are also able to meet turtles in the lagoon and feed them before they are released back into the wild.

Nanjing

The forested slopes of Zijn Mountain, also known as Purple Mountain due to the golden and purple clouds which cover it at dusk and dawn, are scattered with natural and man-made splendours. Reconnect with nature and take a day trip out to the mountains to see the hill’s beauty up close, from the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the observatory within the Botanical Garden. You can even combine your visit with a trip to the Tangshan Hot Springs.

Back at your hotel, immerse yourself in traditional Chinese tea culture with a sunset tea ceremony at the Cha Jie tea lounge, overlooking the Yangtze River. A symbol of unity, respect and gratitude, tea ceremonies are an integral part of Chinese culture.

You can also get active at Talise Spa, perched on the 63th floor of Jumeirah Nanjing, which offers panoramic views of Nanjing and the flowing Yangtze river. Here, you can take part in a Yin Yoga session and reflect on your trip with a slow-paced method of yoga which incorporates traditional Chinese medicinal principles. Or, get the blood pumping with a group exercise class.
